When I was a child, I liked to play with my friends. When I played outside, I especially liked that there were no adults around and that we could move around freely in the forest and the neighbourhood. I also loved playing with Barbie horses. I wanted a pony for every birthday and Christmas. Unfortunately, my family could not afford such an expensive hobby. For financial reasons, we could never go abroad either, but I particularly enjoyed family holidays at the North Sea or the Baltic Sea.

Dr. Anne Carolina Ramos (Project Collaborator)

Research interests: Research with children, intergenerational relationships, grandparenting, transnational families, social relationships, well-being

Habilitation working title: ‘Social relationships in childhood: how do they influence well-being from the children’s perspectives?’

When I was a child, I liked to feed all the dogs I could find on the street. I also enjoyed playing with my mother’s sewing machine, needles and coloured threads. I had many friends in my neighbourhood and, together with my siblings, we would play on the streets until evening. My favourite place was my grandmother’s farm, where I could spend a lot of time on the green, surrounded by cows, sheep, chickens and many hugs.

MA Andrea Riepl (Project Collaborator)

Research interests: Research with children, child well-being research, methods of qualitative social research (especially interviews and group discussions)

Dissertation working title: ‘Capabilities and well-being – a justice theory perspective on (in)visible childhoods’

When I was a child, I liked playing outside with my friends and brothers in the woods. While outside, we had our own little world exploring the wild and playing games together. At home, I enjoyed reading under a blanket until late at night and talking with my family about everything and everyone. My favourite place was when everyone in the family – parents, brothers, grandparents and cousins –came together to eat and talk noisily.

Luiza als Kind

When I was a child, I liked to arrange performances. I would dance, sing or perform acrobatics in front of my family and guests and finish by saying ‘And now applause!’ I also liked to play with my sister in the garden, where we would build our own house, set up traps for neighbours because we thought they were stealing our peas (they were not) or create our own special way of picking ripe cherries. Rules and justice were also very important to me and I wanted to become a court judge.

Dr. Franziska Schlattmeier (Project Collaborator)

Research Interests: children and childhood, child well-being research, social inequality, profession theory, methods of qualitative research, In particular methods of childhood studies

Title of the dissertation: Children`s agency in day-care centres

As a child, I loved to play imagination games. Preferably outside and on my own. I talked to Imaginary people, petted Invisible dogs, rode on tree-horses, or roamed about the magic forest. But it was also great to play with my "real" siblings and children from the neighbourhood and build tree houses, do doorbell pranks on our neighbours, come up with stories with our Playmobil, or jump on our parents` bed with a trampoline.

Master’s students in the project

Alexandra Roggensinger (Master's Student)

Research interests: Research with children, vulnerability in the context of institutional education, vulnerability of children with disabilities, early childhood, vocational training and special needs education

Master’s thesis working title: ‘Vulnerability and well-being of children with disabilities in the context of special needs education’

When I was a child, I liked to sit next to my grandparents and listen to their stories while my grandmother was knitting or crocheting. Her passion is now also my passion as I still love to crochet. We lived in a multigenerational household and had many animals, like cats, dogs, pigs, chickens and fledglings, so I often played with and took care of them. When I was at home, I also loved to play with my cousin. Mostly we gathered all the pillows from the beds and couches and built our own fort. The highlight of the year was when we all went camping together on the banks of the Danube in the summer holidays.
