Mathematics Tutor to Assist with Individual Learning Requirements (MATHiL)

Project Leaders: Thomas Schmalfeldt (PHZH), Sascha Schneider (UZH)
UZH project team: Ömer Tugsad Akgül, Cristina Tulea
Funding: Digitalization Initiative of Zurich Universities (DIZH)

The MATHiL project is developing an intelligent tutoring system to help secondary school students close persistent gaps in number concepts, place value systems, and basic arithmetic. Targeted, personalized support in class and during independent learning is designed to identify learning difficulties early on and address them individually. MATHiL is conceived as an open platform that actively involves teachers in its further development and creates sustainable continuing education opportunities. With a strong focus on equal opportunities, the project is aimed in particular at socio-economically disadvantaged students who have often had to manage without additional support. Through close cooperation with schools and an iterative development process, MATHiL aims to reduce educational inequalities and strengthen mathematical competence in a long-term and effective manner.
